From what I’ve heard, it wasn’t a horrible engine stock, it just wasn’t nearly as good as the SBC from a modding perspective.

It had extremely weird intake port layouts which hampered airflow  and poor oiling to the heads.  No accident it was replaced 8 years later, though Ford was really goofy about engine families back then.
